Foggia, migrants attacked while going to work:the second case in two weeks.
They threw stones from a car running against three young migrants who were going to work in the fields of Foggia. The aggression was consummated at dawn on Tuesday 23 July and is not isolated. The dynamics is similar to that of the incident that took place last July 15, when two other migrant laborers were hit and injured in the head while they went to work in the Capitanata countryside. Always early in the morning, always while they were cycling.
Foggia, migrants attacked while going to work: the second case in two weeks
They threw stones from a car running against three young migrants who were going to work in the fields of Foggia. The aggression was consummated at dawn on Tuesday 23 July and is not isolated. The dynamics are similar to that of the incident that took place last July 15, when two other migrant laborers were hit and injured in the head while they went to work in the Capitanata countryside. Always early in the morning, always while they were cycling.
The first of three injured children yesterday, according to the police, is a 22-year-old Gambian boy and was found by the police with a cut to the head and, after the emergency room, he was taken to the hospital, where he is still hospitalized.
Asgi is working on its legal coverage and is assisted by Intersos doctors. The medical report (as shown also by the next photo obtained from TPI) indicates a displaced right orbit zygomatic fracture with an evident skin lesion and eyelid edema, will have to be operated and an ophthalmological evaluation will have to be performed.
The other two, migrant laborers aged 23 and 30, suffered head injuries. The three victims live in Via Manfredonia in a formerly abandoned factory, where migrants attacked on 15 July also live.
Another attack occurred on July 17, again at dawn and in the same area on the outskirts of Foggia: a worker was rammed by a car while going to work
on a scooter. On impact, he lost a tooth and he got a wound on his lower lip. He said he heard, while he was lying on the ground, a person get out of the car and hit the scooter with force. An assault also occurred on July 13th with the same procedure: two people were hit in the head by the throwing of stones.
“For months, workers, mostly migrants from sub-Saharan Africa, who are assisting with our mobile health project in the ghettos of the province of Foggia, report growing intimidation by Italians,” he told TPIAlessandro Verona, medical representative of the Intersos migration unit that assisted the workers, while the CGIL took care of following the legal aspect. INTERSOS has been working in Capitanata since the summer of 2018 and, in more than twelve months of presence on the territory, has provided a social-health assistance system through direct medical interventions with two mobile units working in seven settlements. Together with the two doctors, also two cultural mediators.
“They report verbal threats of violence and even death, often suffered when passing through Foggia from work, on foot or by bicycle. ” The air has changed, we will kill you all,” they told us they had heard in recent months, “continues Verona.
“They are greatly shaken, and just like the rest of the community of workers live in the concern of this persecutory climate, which adds to the precariousness of labor exploitation and difficult housing conditions, without valid alternatives given by the institutions”, adds Verona.
A situation that is not new since, as Verona continues, the past summer has also occurred. “Already last year there were similar attacks, with water bottles being thrown from a moving car, systematically reported by the victims. This violence has always been inflicted at sunrise, always and only at the expense of African workers, “concludes Verona.
On March 28, Daniel Nyarko, a 51-year-old Ghanaian citizen, was killed with two gunshots fired by unknown persons a few kilometers east of Borgo Mezzanone, while returning home by bicycle after shopping. He was the guardian of a farm, the Ghanaian community told us that in the past he had defended it from attempts at theft, arresting the thieves.
Foggia attacked migrants: investigations
One of the investigative tracks on the two stone-throwing sites, followed by the Police and the Carabinieri, concerns the possible presence of a group of corporals who are afraid the armfuls who do not come to them to look for work in the fields. In fact, the two workers attacked last July 15 are part of a small community that works by choice without corporals, contacting employers directly. They have a regular contract and are regularly followed by the CGIL.
Investigators hypothesize that, behind the stone-throwing gesture, there are racist motivations.
